A Spatial Transformation
Before: Topographical Disconnection & Asymmetry
Prior to the intervention, the property suffered from severe spatial inefficiencies. The expansive front yard was dominated by a steep, overgrown earth mound that visually obstructed the home and offered zero usability. Access from the street was restricted to a set of narrow, steep brick steps, isolating the house from the road level. Furthermore, the backyard was constrained by an irregular, slanted perimeter fence that disrupted the visual harmony and symmetry of the garden layout.
The Brief & Vision
When tasked with a complete landscape makeover for this contemporary California bungalow, the core design brief was highly specific: integrate a functional, premium golf putting green into the garden. However, as landscape architects, our mission extended beyond satisfying the brief—we sought to resolve deep structural and topographical challenges that severely limited the property's potential.
The Masterstroke : Engineering the Signature Architectural Ramp
To unlock the front yard's dormant potential, we completely re-engineered the terrain. Removing the obstructed slope, we introduced a sweeping, multi-tiered hardscape ramp that connects the street level smoothly and continuously to the side yard.
Flanked by striking, modern stacked-stone retaining walls, this winding pathway transforms a former "dead zone" into a beautifully walkable, dynamic journey. Enhanced with clean-lined architectural concrete and integrated under-cap LED lighting, the ramp becomes a luminous sculpture at night. This bold structural solution instantly became the signature feature of the house, dramatically elevating its curb appeal and capturing the attention of the entire neighborhood.
The Solution: Geometric Camouflage & Hidden Enclaves
In the backyard, we resolved the issue of the irregular boundary lines using strict geometric design principles. We introduced a low, linear stone-faced sitting wall running parallel to the primary living zones, effectively camouflaging the slanted fence through clever perspective lines.
Understanding the lifestyle of the home, we engineered a deliberate, functional gap between the new low stone wall and the perimeter fence. This created a hidden garden enclave where the owner’s wife can discreetly organize and store her extensive potted plant collection, maintaining a clean, uncluttered view from the main lawn.
Delivering the Dream: The Private Putting Green
With structural balance restored, the remaining landscape was optimized for elite recreation. The main garden was transformed into a flawlessly leveled, pristine synthetic putting green. Surrounded by clean concrete ribbons, integrated turf strips, and sophisticated structural plantings, the space balances high-end residential luxury with daily sporting utility.
